Gusset (textile)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A gusset is a piece of fabric that is inserted into a seam to give the wearer of the garment more comfort and freedom of movement. While earlier gussets z. For example, they were used in the forearm area of clothes , they are rarely found today, except in the back of jackets , underwear and tights , as wide cuts and elastic fabrics allow sufficient freedom of movement.

In the genital area

Gussets are used in the crotch area for the following reasons, whereby several can complement or exclude each other:

Typical hygienic cotton gusset in the crotch of a synthetic women's thong
  • For better hygiene as an additional partly undyed layer of fabric or plating in the intimate area on the inside of women's underpants . Such a layer of fabric also reduces the friction between the fabric and the skin. Hygiene gussets, crotch lining, receipts, laundry gussets or just gussets are common names. The last name can also be a combination of the main material, e.g. B. Often used cotton, as a cotton gusset. Silk, satin or microfibre are also used. Some of these have an antibacterial effect . Intended to remove excretions such as B. to absorb normal vaginal discharge or sweat and allow it to dry by evaporation and thus to be more comfortable on the skin in the genital area. This should also reduce skin irritation, fungal and urinary tract infections. The upper material above it can also be a mesh fabric in order to improve the breathability, which is criticized with upper material made of synthetic fibers. The German also speaks of the hygienic gusset in mesh optics. In English more specifically from "Ventilated cotton gusset", "ventilated cotton gusset". As a cost-effective alternative also only as a pure net, which itself often consists only of synthetic fibers. Even with the use of hydrophilic substances, the moisture absorption is criticized here as inadequate. Fabric thicknesses range from two layers of fabric to a network structure. The pubic cleft is usually not completely covered with underwear. If this gusset is not functioning properly or is missing, a panty liner can be glued in or additional underwear can be worn. Underwear without a second layer of fabric or plating can also be made thicker or have honeycomb structures.
  • To improve the fit, e.g. B. as a connection of the inside of the thighs of long-legged slippers, which are knitted from a seamless tube. In the crotch of tights to form the lower horizontal area of the panties.

  • To visually better cover the genital area. Often found in swimwear, lacy lingerie or sportswear.
  • For easier toilet use as a split gusset. In principle the same as the intervention of men's underpants. Occasionally found in corsetry with legs or high-waisted tights. Not to be confused with the crotch fastener on bodysuits .

Swimwear

The so-called gusset decree of 1932 stipulated that swimsuits for women and men had to be gusseted in order to reveal less bare skin. This is an additional layer of fabric on the inside that completely covers the genitals. Quick-drying, moisture-repellent synthetics are preferred over cotton. This makes swimwear rather unsuitable as a substitute for underwear.

Running pants

Here gussets can be processed for a better fit. Gender-specific for men to support the genitals and for women to prevent cutting into them. The crotch can also be lined and the upper material can be made of mesh for better breathability.

Tights

Additional gussets can be sewn into the crotch on the inside of the thigh for pure expansion.
