Garlic Pot (from Spain)

An onion pot is a pot-shaped storage container for onions , shallots and garlic in the home, which is available in different designs and styles. It is usually a pot made of ceramic , earthenware , terracotta or clay that can be closed with a suitable lid. A variant is the usually smaller garlic pot, which is offered by some manufacturers to match the respective onion pot.

Formings and features

When using a garlic or onion pot that is placed near the kitchen work area, a “hand supply” of garlic or onions is available for cooking. Any remaining stock can be stored as usual in a suitable container such as a wire basket in a cupboard, pantry or basement.

The pots are available in different designs and styles. In addition to being used as special storage containers, some of them also serve as decorative elements in the kitchen area. The lids are usually made in the same way as the pots, but sometimes also in wood or cork .

Storage in a garlic or onion pot, protected from light, delays and reduces the germination of the garlic or onions. In addition, the closable pot ensures that “the strong smell of garlic and onions does not spread too much and affect other foods”. The garlic or onion pot must be sufficiently ventilated so that the air can circulate inside the pot and no moisture or waterlogging can build up. The garlic or onions should stay dry and not go moldy or sprout. This is why there are usually a few holes built into the pot to ventilate the contents.
