description

Filling a lock chamber on rivers is not a problem, as the flowing water always guarantees a sufficient supply of water. However , water consumption must be reduced by the design of the lock on canals into which no or only small natural tributaries flow. The principle of the economy lock is used for individual lock chambers .

If the lock consists of two chambers and the volume of traffic is almost the same in both directions, the other lock chamber in a twin lock takes on the function of the saving basin. Ascent and descent can be funneled at the same time, with some water being exchanged between the chambers and only around half of it flowing into the underwater and having to be supplemented by the upper water.
