history

Former Götschendorf manor house

The property - a former estate with a manor house - belonged to the von Arnim family for centuries . The manor house was rebuilt around 1900. In the 1930s and 1940s the property served as Hermann Göring's hunting lodge and guest house . After that it was the holiday home of the National People's Army and the Ministry of State Security . After the fall of the Wall it was no longer used and has been empty since 1996.

The Russia journalist Norbert Kuchinke came across the site in 2006 while looking for a location for a Russian Orthodox monastery he had planned near Berlin. After initial hesitation on the part of the local authorities, contacts in the Potsdam State Chancellery and the advocacy of Pastor Horst Kasner from Templin helped to implement the project.

The site was bought for a symbolic euro with the stipulation that at least 3 million euro be invested in the expansion of the site over the next 15 years. A personal conversation between Norbert Kuchinkes and President Putin brought some of the necessary financial support. In 2007 the monastery was officially founded by a resolution of the Supreme Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church .

In the course of the renovation and new construction work, a church in the North Russian style was built. In 2011 the first monks moved in. In 2013 a cross on the dome was consecrated by Archbishop Feofan. At that time there were five monks living in the monastery.

In 2015, a cross was consecrated in a solemn service to commemorate the end of the war 70 years ago.
