Intermediate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under intermediate or intermediate is understood in the chemistry , the product of a chemical reaction which is not isolated from chemical, technical or economic reasons or in traffic is brought, but further implemented.

The conceptual boundaries between raw material, intermediate product and end product are often arbitrary and depend on the respective perspective. For example, urea is an end product for a manufacturer who sells this product to a third party. If the third party uses urea to produce melamine , it is a raw material for them. If the urea producer processes the product himself, it is an intermediate product for him.

The EU chemicals regulation REACH differentiates between intermediate products

  • non-isolated intermediates
  • on-site isolated intermediates and
  • transported isolated intermediates

While the non-isolated intermediate products are excluded from the REACH regulation, there is a registration for the isolated intermediate products with lower information requirements, provided that a substance release during manufacture and use can be safely excluded.
