gOS ( g ood O perating S ystem ; German good operating system ) was a Linux distribution that was developed by gOS LLC in Los Angeles . It was first released on November 1, 2007 with the sale of the Everex Green gPC TC2502, a personal computer that was available in the US at Walmart for $ 199. All gPCs were sold out within two weeks.

gOS is based on Ubuntu and has a few hyperlinks aimed at Google applications. However, it is not a Google operating system as often read. Everex, the manufacturer of the aforementioned gOS PC, clearly states: "Everex makes it easy for everyone with the gPC (Everex and its products, the gPC and gOS, are not affiliated with or sponsored by Google Inc.)" . The package management as well as the hardware detection were taken over by Ubuntu. Like Ubuntu, the system can be tested using a live system without changing an installed system. The medium image required for this can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Editions

There are different editions of gOS. Universally, gOS has a macOS -like dock with which Gmail , Wikipedia , Google Drive and local programs such as Skype and GIMP can be accessed.

gOS 3.x gadgets

Version 3.x also supports Windows programs thanks to Wine technology and is delivered together with Mozilla Firefox 3, Skype and OpenOffice.org .

gOS Rocket G

gOS Rocket G uses the Gnome desktop environment and, in contrast to the first version, this Rocket (in German rocket ) version is no longer Everex-labeled and therefore no longer tailored for the gPC, but rather suitable for the general public. gOS Rocket G is available on DVD .

gOS Rocket E

Works with Enlightenment as a desktop environment . Since this is slimmer than GNOME, this edition is particularly recommended for less powerful PCs. However, Enlightenment 17 was still in development at the time of release, so bugs can still occur. Since Enlightenment is very small, gOS Rocket E is available on CD .

gOS Space

gOS Space

This edition is specially tailored for users of the widely used social network Myspace . It contains partly self-programmed and partly external programs that were designed exclusively for the use of Myspace. It uses GNOME and some parts of Enlightenment as the desktop environment.
