The Austrian Football Championship 1956/57 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The also professionally run State League B served as the substructure for State League A , but only clubs from Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Upper Austria and Styria played. The Tauern League North (Salzburg), the Tauern League South (Carinthia) and the Arlbergliga (Tyrol, Vorarlberg) were organized on an amateur basis for clubs from western Austria, where there was not yet any professional operation. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First level - State League A

General

In the championship season 1956/57 it looked like the seventh title for Vienna for a long time, but in a splendid race to catch up, Rapid was able to get closer to the top of the table point by point in the spring. The green-whites celebrated 12 wins in a row, particularly impressive the 8: 1 over Kapfenberg, the 12: 1 over Krems and the 9: 1 over Stadlau, but especially the 3: 2 over Vienna in front of 35,000 spectators in the Vienna Stadium. The decision was finally made on the penultimate day of the match, as Vienna lost 1: 2 to Admira and Rapid beat Sport-Club 2: 0 and were thus able to become Austrian football champions for the 21st time. The club qualified for the European Cup of National Champions in 1958 in which the narrow end came in the playoff against AC Milan. The relegation battle this season ended to the disadvantage of Austria Salzburg and FC Stadlaus.

    Relegation

Relegation to the State League A

The two promotion places in the 1956/57 season were awarded on the one hand to the champions of the B-League, the second played off in a relegation round. The Arlberg champion Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz first played against the Tauern League South champion WSG Radenthein to qualify for the relegation games for the State League A. The WSG Radenthein was allowed to compete, as the Tauern League North champion SK Bischofshofen against the runner-up of the Tauern League South Wolfsberger AC had previously lost with a total score of 4-6. The Vorarlbergers could just prevail against the Carinthians. However, the Bregenz lost in the playoff for promotion to the state league A against the runner-up in the B league, FC Vienna. This was able to shoot his way into the A-League with two wins.
