The Austrian Football Championship 1971/72 was organized by the Austrian Football Association. The regional leagues east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First performance level - national league

General

The championship in the National League 1971/72 began on August 20, 1971. What was new was that Friday evening was also a so-called mandatory date (visiting clubs could not, as had previously been possible, defend themselves against such a scheduled game). From spring 1972 yellow and red cards were used by the referees. And for the first time, video evidence was allowed to determine the penalty for crimes committed by players.

Championship course

The Swarovski Wattens-Innsbruck syndicate, founded before the start of the season, won the title, although for a long time it was a three-way battle with VÖEST from Linz and Austria from Vienna. After 25 out of 30 rounds of the championships (as of May 13-14), all three clubs had 32 points in their accounts. After the Tyroleans had conquered the top of the table with a 2-1 win at Rapid Vienna on May 25th, they took Austria themselves out of the race with a 2-0 home win in the 27th round (May 28th); with VÖEST it came though on the final day (June 17) for the direct duel (result 1: 1), but this counterparty was both SV Austria Salzburg in the 26th round (May 20) in feud with 1: 0 and defeated by Austria with their 3-2 victory on Linz soil in the penultimate round (June 14th) and was thus (also) out of the race. As Austrian champions, the Tyrolean syndicate qualified for the 1973 European Cup , Cup winner Rapid was allowed to take part in the 1973 European Cup , and the defeated competitors Austria and VÖEST represented Austrian football in the 1973 UEFA Cup . Only Rapid provided positive accents by reaching the second round, but there came the elimination against namesake Rapid Bucureşti.

statistics

After the autumn Innsbruck led with 20 points ahead of Salzburg and Donawitz with 19 each and Rapid and Austria with 18. In the spring table, Austria was ahead of Innsbruck (19), VÖEST (18) and Salzburg and Sturm Graz (each 16) ahead; Rapid was only 6th with 15 points. Sturm Graz was the only team to remain unbeaten at home, which also meant first place in the home table (24 points) - ahead of VÖEST (23) and Innsbruck (22). Three home defeats for Rapid meant 18 points and 9th place. On foreign soil the order was Austria (18) ahead of Innsbruck (17) and Rapid (15).
