23 is a collaboration album by the German rappers Bushido and Sido , who also appeared under the name 23 as part of this collaboration . The album was released on October 14, 2011 and reached third place in the German album charts . In Switzerland the album got in first place and in Austria in third place.

background

Bushido and Sido were both under contract with the Berlin rap label Aggro Berlin between 2001 and 2004. In 2004 Bushido Aggro Berlin left due to differences with its management and as a result had a media-rich dispute with his former employer and the artists employed there. After the musical side of this conflict initially mainly played out between Bushido and his former collaboration partner Fler , who remained with Aggro Berlin , and the "beef" with Sido was limited to various media statements, from 2008 these parties also published several disstracks , which were sometimes deeply insulted. about 4, 3, 2, 1 (Thank you aggro) of heavy metal payback as well as with Kay One published Freetrack SIDO pages Bushidos and on aggro anti announcement no. 8 published you're shit and who together with Alpa Gun recorded Freetrack Merry Christmas on Sido's side. With the dissolution of Aggro Berlin in spring 2009, Bushido and Fler were reconciled, which ultimately led to the break between the latter and Sido.

In January 2011, however, Bushido and Sido, by now two of the most successful artists in German hip-hop , finally settled their conflict. The reason for the reconciliation were congratulations on getting better that Sido expressed to Bushido in his Freetrack 2010 , which appeared at the turn of the year and in which he and his arrest warrant reviewed the past year of published rap albums. He had previously had an operation for a herniated disc and had to postpone his planned tour as a result. Bushido responded to the recovery wishes via Twitter and thus initiated the first dialogue between the two musicians in years.

According to the two artists, the idea of a joint album came about against the background that after Bushido and Sido had decided to cement their private reconciliation musically, neither of the two parties wanted to over-favor. First of all, they would have considered scenarios that would have provided a guest part of one rapper on the next album of the other. In the opinion of the two artists, such a title would have meant a considerable market advantage for the artist published first. Because during their time together at Aggro Berlin, the number of joint titles by Bushido and Sido, despite a fundamental tendency of the record company to collaborate within the label, remained manageable. In Bushido debut album from the curb to the Skyline Sido was together with his AidS -Partner B-Tight on the title race was represented on the label samplers Aggro announcement no. 1 , Aggro announcement no. 2 and Aggro announcement no. 3 steered the Trio in this constellation, in the latter case supplemented by Fler, the respective title track. There had never been a song on which only Sido and Bushido appeared together.

At the time of the making of 23 Bushido and Sido were under contract as solo artists with the competing record labels Sony BMG and Universal Music . According to both artists, the album was therefore released on the highest-bidding label. Universal had a first bidder option, but was outbid by Sony.

Emergence

Recording & production

The recordings for 23 took a total of six weeks, but were often interrupted by both artists having to make appointments. In addition to the two artists Bushido and Sido, Beatzarre , Djorkaeff , DJ Desue and Paul NZA were responsible for the beats on 23 . Paul NZA contributed a title in collaboration with Marek Pompetzki with And already again as well as DJ Desue with Haus aus Gold . Bushido, Beatzarre and Djorkaeff were responsible for the production of all other titles, with Sido taking over the production for the titles So do I do it , being grown up , Bring me home and Kopf Kaputt next to them.

Most of the songs were recorded and mixed in the Beatzarre Studio in Berlin by Beatzarre & Djorkaeff. The use of samples was completely dispensed with during production. The skits of the album were recorded with the participation of Playboy 51 .

Project title

According to both artists, album 23 comes from the fact that it would be the 23rd work of both artists. Bushido had previously released 13 albums and Sido 9 albums. In fact, you only get these numbers because Bushido's demo albums Demotape and King of Kingz as well as the Carlo-Cokxxx-Nutten series and publications by Alles ist die Sekt were added to the count , while Sido and Harris were counted as Your favorite rappers published your favorite album and Berlin's Most Wanted, recorded by Bushido with Fler and Kay One, as well as samplers from the labels Aggro Berlin and ersguterjunge were ignored in the count. At the same time played Bushido and Sido in the first promotional video for the album as well as the music video for how I do it consciously with Masonic symbology and were therefore, as they explained in interviews, aware of the choice of the number 23 , which in the Illuminatmytik a It is of the utmost importance to ensure appropriate attention. Originally, as both explained in interviews, the plan was to name the joint project 23 , but the album 1 . However, this plan was discarded due to potential overlap with the One published by Kool Savas and Azad in 2005 .

In the music media, 23 received mediocre reviews overall. For the website rap.de , Oliver Marquart rated 23 with 6 out of 10 stars. The album is classified as "interesting music" on a "late work" by two well-deserved rappers, but which can no longer provide any new impulses. Within the mostly solid titles, Engel links, Teufel right and Kopf kaputt are identified as the highlights of the album. Even a fairy tale , interlock your door and Kay Ones post on Brave New World found positive mention. On the other hand, the frequency of the tracks, which deal with the reconciliation of the two main actors on the album, the “For the whole family” guest contribution by Peter Maffay and the album skits is viewed more critically.

Dani Fromm from the Laut.de e-zine rated 23 with three out of five possible points. Although they liked the single So ich ich es as well as Haus aus Gold , the title track 23 and Kopf kaputt , Fromm's verdict on the album is mixed. In addition to guest contributions by Peter Maffay and J-Luv, as well as the associated titles Be Grown up and Bring mich heim and the song Even if it rains sometimes are rated particularly negative . These titles are not spared criticism of the production, which is otherwise largely positively rated.

The website of the Austrian magazine The Gap attested 23 a lot of “wasted potential” . The album drew a comparison to the album Watch the Throne by the American rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z , which had already been put forward by some quarters in the run-up to the album release, but concluded that these two "would not even raise their eyebrows at this kitsch" . In particular, the album lacks the single So I do it on "functioning concepts", which was found to be "good " .

Focus

In news magazines not belonging to the music media, 23 was rated more negatively overall. The Focus , which rated 23 with 4 out of 10 stars, describes the work as a “loveless and detailed piece of bar stock” and highlights the cover as the greatest highlight of the album.

The star , too, criticized the album's lack of innovation in particular and also pointed to the only outstanding title in his opinion, Adult Being , significant parallels to the conception of Bushido's hit, recorded together with Karel Gott , Forever Young .

The album was reviewed for Die Zeit by the journalist and former Royal Bunker boss Marcus Staiger . He criticized the lack of sharpness of the album, found the project "entertaining" at times, but emphasized at the same time that "new and sparkling [...] different" would be possible.
