The Almsee is a lake in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut . It is located in the Almtal 11 km south of Grünau im Almtal , at the northern end of the Dead Mountains . The lake, which was previously called Albensee, is 2.3 km long and 700 m wide. The lake is the source of the Alm , which flows into the Traun , a tributary of the Danube .
Emergence
A large-scale transformation of the Almtal took place at the end of the Wurm Age about 13,000 years ago by the late glacial landslide in the Hetzau. In this case, about 0.5 cubic kilometers of rock material dissolved from the plate of the high Büchsenkar Kogels and filled the Hetzau and Straneggbachtal to Almtal (approximately in the range of the inn Jagersimmerl) with a Tomalandschaft . This 12 km long rubble tongue is one of the longest in the Eastern Alps. The Alm and the Weißeneggbach were dammed and the Almsee was created behind the alluvial cone .
nature
The area has been under nature protection since 1965 ( nature reserve Almsee in Grünau , N149 ). It includes the lake and the Alm 3 kilometers south, and the Alm and some meadows 2 kilometers down, covering 83.3447 hectares. Swimming, diving and other water sports are therefore prohibited in principle, but there is a small public bathing area at the north end, in which the shore zone is used. Because of the cold water, it is rarely visited.
A special attraction was the floating island . This roughly round piece of land, which is overgrown with grass, spruce and birch and has changed its location on the lake depending on the wind, has been stuck on the eastern shore of the lake for more than ten years.
flora
On the flat north-west bank there is a beautiful mosaic of black alder swamp forests, gray alder stocks, various large sedge societies and swinging lawns with raised bog vegetation . In the undergrowth of the black alder break forest, the clumps of the stiff sedge ( Carex elata ) dominate, together with comb fern ( Dryopteris cristata ), swamp fern ( Thelypteris palustris ) and long-lasting sedge ( Carex elongata ). The tall sedge consists of panicle sedge ( Carex paniculata ), beak sedge ( Carex rostrata ), thread sedge ( Carex lasiocarpa ) and stiff sedge ( Carex elata ). In the clear mountain water, which even in summer does not get warmer than 15 ° C within ten days due to complete renewal, the mountain clan of the hair-leaved water crowfoot ( Ranunculus trichophyllus ) flourishes under water . A few years ago the marsh soft orchid ( Hammarbya paludosa ), believed to be extinct, was discovered in the area .
fauna
The Almsee is a typical salmonid body of water , the fish species that occur are brook trout , lake char , brown trout , lake trout , rainbow trout and grayling . The beaver occurs on the south bank .
Others
- The Almsee is also very popular for ice skating or ice stock sport , as it usually freezes over completely in winter .
- Konrad Lorenz made many of his important observations on gray geese here at the Almsee.
- On December 12, 1974, the Austrian Post issued a definitive stamp of the series Landscapes from Austria for this motif for 4.00 Schilling.
