Axel Jungk (born March 5, 1991 in Zschopau ) is a German skeleton athlete .

Career

Axel Jungk lives in Dresden and starts for the BSC Sachsen Oberbärenburg . He started skeleton in 2008 after previously being a ski jumper . He made his debut with the men as part of the German Championships in 2010 in Altenberg , where he was runner- up behind David Lingmann . Jungk made his international debut at the start of the 2010/11 season in the European Skeleton Cup . In the first two races in Cesana Pariol he immediately placed on the podium twice behind Christian Baude and Anton Batujew . In the overall standings of the series, he came in fifth place. He also started in the 2011/12 season in the European Cup and, after placing between ranks 5 and 11 in all eight races of the season, finished fifth in the overall standings. At the Junior World Championships in 2012 in Igls , he was world champion ahead of Christopher Grotheer and David Lingmann. At the Senior World Championships , he reached 22nd place.

In the 2012/13 season Jungk started in the Intercontinental Cup . He finished on the podium five times during the winter and celebrated his first win in Park City . In the overall standings, he finished second behind Alexander Gassner . At the Junior World Championships for the 2012/13 season, he won the silver medal behind Christopher Grotheer. In winter 2013/14 Axel Jungk was again in action in the European Cup and achieved podium positions in all eight races of the season: he won twice, came second four times and third twice. In the overall standings, he finished second behind Dominic Rady , who also made it onto the podium in all races. For the 2014/15 season he was able to qualify for the World Cup for the first time and made his debut in Lake Placid with a fourth place. At the German Championships in 2015 , he won silver for the second time. In the overall World Cup he was third behind Martins and Tomass Dukurs without reaching a podium. At the 2015 Skeleton World Championship , Jungk won gold in the team competition. In the second race of the season of the winter of 2015/16 he reached his first World Cup podium finish with a shared second place at the same time as Alexander Tretyakov in Winterberg . At the end of 2015 Jungk became German champion for the first time in Altenberg . In January 2016, he finished third in Park City on the podium again in the World Cup. In 2017 Axel Jungk took part in the Worlds Championships and won silver. A year later he started at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and finished seventh.
