background

Blow Up Your Video was the last album with drummer Simon Wright , who was replaced by Chris Slade on the follow-up album The Razors Edge . For all songs on the album, the singer Brian Johnson is given as a co-author for the last time; on all later albums only the brothers Malcolm and Angus Young are listed as authors. For producers Harry Vanda and George Young, it was the first fully AC / DC album they had produced in ten years. reception

The album had the best sales figures of an AC / DC album since For Those About to Rock 1981. In the US Billboard 200 reached Blow Up Your Video 12th place and received a platinum award in the UK was album charts, it reached No. 2 and awarded with gold. It also ranked second in Australia, while it was fourth in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.

The album was received mixed among fans and critics. The music journalist Michael Rensen, for example, wrote the following verdict on Blow Up Your Video : “With the soundtrack album Who Made Who , AC / DC tasted blood again, and with Blow Up Your Video they proved two years later that they were also on a regular, only longplayers filled with new numbers are still able to achieve great things. That's the Way I Wanna Rock'n'Roll , Meanstreak and Kissin 'Dynamite are shitkickers in front of the gentleman, who bomb all disgusting Rock'n'Roll youngsters back to kindergarten with a clap of thunder. You can finally go crazy with the royal cracker Heatseeker , who presents AC / DC from their most delicious chocolate side. Everything grooves, riffs and snuggly just as perfectly as it is earthy, the chorus lets the adrenaline level shoot up to dizzying heights, and Brian Johnson tells us a story that in its power of speech could almost have come from his unforgettable predecessor Bon Scott. Great! "

The magazine Audio summed up their conclusion as follows: “Don't worry about saving electricity: high voltage is all the rage. In time for the tour of Germany, the Australian compact rock group presents ten songs in the established manner - driven by the rough voice of Brian Johnson and Angus Young's tart guitar arts without voltage drop "Next of was the following. Götz Kühnemund in rock magazine Rock Hard to read: “Although AC / DC undoubtedly passed their musical peak years ago, they are still considered one of the best hard rock bands in the world - and certainly not without good reason. Even after listening to it for the tenth time, I'm still in the dark about Blow Up Your Video . You won't find any really outstanding pieces like Whole Lotta Rosie , Hells Bells or Fly on the Wall on the new album. Although the current single Heatseeker and the AC / DC-atypical Ruff Stuff are successful songs with catchy tunes, the LP sounds a bit powerless compared to its predecessors. In a nutshell: Blow Up Your Video has - of course - become an above-average rock'n'roll album, but it doesn't stand up to comparisons with Highway to Hell or Back in Black . "
