The Razors Edge (Engl. For " Des razor's edge ") is the eleventh international studio album of the Australian hard rock band AC / DC . It was released on September 21, 1990 on Atco, a sub-label of Atlantic Records .

background

The Razors Edge is the only AC / DC studio album with Chris Slade on drums. For the follow-up album Ballbreaker , Phil Rudd returned to the band, who had already played on the first AC / DC albums.

The singer Brian Johnson was not available to the band for several months due to his divorce, which is why the songs here were written exclusively by the Young brothers for the first time. Originally recorded for Blow Up Your Video , Down on the Borderline was first used on the Australian version of the single Moneytalks .

This time production was subject to Bruce Fairbairn, who had already produced Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, among others. The Razors Edge was recorded in the Canadian city of Vancouver. The album cover was drawn by Don Brautigam .

The The Razors Edge World Tour was the biggest tour of the band AC / DC led through various venues over a year. The tour began on November 2, 1990 in North America, where the band initially performed until December 16, 1990. The following year, the tour continued on January 11, 1991 with additional performances in North America and Canada. This section of the tour lasted until February 22, 1991.

The first performances in Europe took place between March 20 and April 27, 1991, including eleven concerts in Germany. From May 24, 1991 to July 14, the third tour section followed, which was relocated to North America and Canada. The tour ended with over 20 appearances in their native Australia, where the last concert of the tour took place on November 16, 1991. The tour comprised a total of 162 concerts.

A concert film ( Live at Donington , 1992) and a live album ( Live , 1992) were recorded during this tour .

reception

The album turned out to be a surprise success. The sales of The Razors Edge were comparable to those of the albums from AC / DC's "Classic" period in the early 1980s. In the US Billboard 200 the album reached number 2, in the British album charts it came to number 4 and got gold status. The Razors Edge has now been awarded five times platinum in the US . In Canada it even reached the top position and also received five platinum awards. In Germany it stayed in the top 10 for 18 weeks and reached number 4. The record was also successful in its home country Australia, it placed third and received double platinum.

The singles were also very successful compared to the previous albums. With Moneytalks , an AC / DC single hit the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since 1983 , where it landed at number 23. All three singles also reached the UK Top 40 , Moneytalks in 36th place, Are You Ready in 34th place and Thunderstruck in 13th place.

The reviews were also positive. Music journalist Michael Rensen, for example, gave the following conclusion: “AC / DC are one of the few superstar bands that have survived every musical fashion wave without permanent damage and never had to correct their stylistic line. In the 1970s they were innovative pioneers of street rock, in the 1980s they were able to assert themselves despite disco, wave and small creative dropouts, and in the 90s they started with a strong album that closed the throats of all complainers. The Razors Edge not only has an extremely fat sound, but also has some high-caliber rock'n'roll weapons at the start with Moneytalks , Got You by the Balls and the famous opener Thunderstruck , at the sight of which the trend police screams to flee. Every second you can feel the honesty and down-to-earthness with which the Australians pour their attitude towards life into songs and thus sweeten the dreary everyday life a little for millions of people. Whoever turns up his system to this sound no longer needs to fear depression. "

Also idol Kühnemund appeared in Rock Hard magazine of the album inspired and wrote: "The old people are back full! Judas Priest have just released their best album in years, Black Sabbath have cemented their comeback from last year, and AC / DC are unstoppable in 1990! The Razors Edge has gotten much, much better than anyone could have expected after the utterly disappointing Blow Up Your Video LP. A typical AC / DC rocker joins the others, each one a little hymn, which the Angus worshiper can easily shout along after the second run at the latest. Apart from the numbers Goodbye & Good Riddance to Bad Luck (too worn out) and Mistress For Christmas , which in the chorus is strongly reminiscent of Bedlam in Belgium , there are no failures on the disc, and in places AC / DC even has to be acknowledged as unusual originality (e.g. The Razors Edge , Moneytalks , If You Dare ). For the best AC / DC vinyl since For Those About to Rock there are 8.5 points [out of ten possible points]. "
