The German federal highway 404 (abbreviation: B 404 ) leads from Kiel to Lüneburg .

History and state of development

The B 404, also known as “Nord-Süd-Straße” and “Kieler Schnellweg”, has been rebuilt as a completely new line from Kiel to the south since the 1950s , except for the areas between Stolpe and Bornhöved (in the 1970s as A 21 completed) and between Grande and Geesthacht . It was planned as a fast connection between Kiel and the A 1 , and thus as a relief section of the B 4 , which at that time, before the construction of the A 7 , was the main connection between Kiel and Hamburg . In the 1960s, construction was continued south of the A1 . There the B 404 has already been built without crossing. In the mid-1980s, the four-lane expansion between Neversdorf and Bad Oldesloe took place . In 1992 the four-lane expansion of the subsequent line between Negernbötel and Neversdorf was completed, and in 1998 the line between Bad Oldesloe and Hammoor was completed. In this year, the entire four-lane section between Negernbötel and Hammoor was upgraded to a motorway.

As part of this renovation and rededication, the connection for cyclists was removed without replacement. Cyclists now have to take long detours in the area of ​​the former B 404.

Elbe bridge and Geesthacht barrage on the B 404

Between the Bargteheide motorway junction near Hammoor and the connection to the A 24 , the B 404 is free of intersections and, from the Lütjensee / Schönberg junction, has mostly three lanes with alternating overtaking lanes (so-called 2 + 1 traffic routing ). On the latter section it is signposted as a motor road. On an approximately 800-meter-long stretch between the end of the upgraded section at the Bargteheide motorway junction and the Bargteheide / Lasbek junction, the B 404 is signposted as a motorway with traffic sign 331 , although it is not designated as a federal motorway and without structurally separate lanes ; see. In the southern section, the B 404 connects the end of the A 25 autobahn at Geesthacht with the Handorf junction of the A 39 . Especially for this, the B 404 was extended from its former end point (confluence with the B 5). Between the bridge over the Elbe Geesthacht at the 1960 built dam Geesthacht and its new end to the A 39 B 404 also reported as a motor vehicle road.

Replacements

Gradually, the B 404 is being rededicated as the A 21 . This has already happened between Stolpe and Hammoor ; a section between Bornhöved and Negernbötel was subsequently completed. This missing intermediate section was opened to traffic on July 2, 2008 after a long construction period, so almost 50 km of the A 21 are now passable in four lanes. A small section (Neumeimersdorf - Wellseedamm) in the Kiel city area was then expanded. No solution has yet been found for the connection of Neumeimersdorf to the B 76 . The Stolpe - Nettelsee section has been under construction since the end of 2011. The Nettelsee - Klein Barkau section is to be built directly afterwards. The Klein Barkau - Wellseedamm section is still in the planning phase. The expansion of the northern section of the Stolpe - Kiel route was envisaged as an urgent requirement with the 2012 planning target.
