The federal highway 36 (abbreviation: B 36 ) is a German federal highway in Baden-Württemberg , which runs in north-south direction almost parallel to the Rhine , to the B 3 and A 5 through the Upper Rhine Plain .

It originally led from the B 37 in Mannheim via Karlsruhe , Rastatt and Kehl to Lahr . Since 2016 it has been downgraded from Mannheim to Schwetzingen and from Graben-Neudorf to Rastatt.

The original B 36 is nicknamed "Badische Spargelstraße".

course

Adjacent communities between Mannheim and Karlsruhe are (from north to south) Graben-Neudorf , Linkenheim-Hochstetten and Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen .

In Karlsruhe, it crosses the districts of Neureut , Knielingen , Nordweststadt and Mühlburg and divides the districts of Grünwinkel and Daxlanden , before reaching Rastatt via Rheinstetten , Durmersheim , Bietigheim and Ötigheim .

history

origin

Bundesstraße 36 was expanded in the early 19th century as an alternative route to Bergstraße . The section from Mannheim to the residential city of Schwetzingen was expanded from 1737 as the first section of the later federal road to the Chaussee . In the late 18th century, the sections from Rastatt to Mühlburg (1769–1772) and from there on to Graben-Neudorf (1780–1781) were also expanded into artificial roads. With the completion of the last section between Schwetzingen and Waghäusel in 1814, what was then the shortest connection between Karlsruhe and Mannheim was completed.

Previous routes and names

The road from Mannheim to Kehl was designated Baden State Road No. 2 in 1901 .

With the original numbering in 1932, the then long-distance road 36 (FVS 36), renamed Reichsstraße 36 (R 36) in 1934, only ran from Mannheim to Rastatt. By 1937, Reichsstrasse 36 was extended via Kehl to Lahr and thus followed the previous Baden State Road No. 2. Its continuation from Kehl to Lahr was designated as Baden State Road No. 29 in 1901 .

Changes in the course

Construction of bypasses

In the course of time, the B 36 was gradually removed from the towns between Rastatt and Mannheim by building bypasses.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the federal highway between Mannheim and Karlsruhe was intensively expanded. The bypass for Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen was completed in 1979, the bypass for Karlsruhe-Neureut in 1980 and the bypass for Linkenheim-Hochstetten in 1986. Since then, the route has run north of Neureut and past the other localities as an eastern bypass. In 1984 the four-lane western bypass of Hockenheim was completed, in 1987 the relocation at Waghäusel / Wiesental, in 1988 the bypass of Neulußheim. In Graben-Neudorf, the B 36 ran through the village until 2006. On May 26, 2006, the last section of the newly built bypass, which runs a good three kilometers on the existing route of the B 35 , was opened to traffic. Between Karlsruhe and Mannheim, the B 36 is only a few short sections on the original route and otherwise consists of new buildings.

On October 9, 2006, the bypass for the three places Bietigheim , Durmersheim and Ötigheim between Karlsruhe and Rastatt was opened to traffic by State Secretary Karin Roth . The approximately 9.7 kilometer route cost around 48 million euros . Of these, 14 million were raised by Deutsche Bahn , since the B 36 was laid out together with the upgraded and new Karlsruhe – Basel line . With the new B 36, the three municipalities were relieved of more than 70 percent of the traffic load of over 20,000 vehicles per day.

Replacements

Former motorway-like section near Hockenheim

At the end of 2009, the B 36 was removed from the Schwetzingen location and downgraded to a local road. The sections leading to the city were added to the adjacent federal highways 535 and 291 . Since then, the B 36 between the Mannheim / Schwetzingen and Schwetzingen / Hockenheim junctions has been interrupted. As an alternative, the A 6 and the parallel state road 599 are available.

As of January 1, 2016, the B 36 was split into two sections due to the lack of long-distance traffic relevance. Between the B 39 near Neulußheim-Nord and the B 35 near Graben-Neudorf, the B 36 was graded to form Landesstraße 560. In the course of this, the section between the Schwetzingen / Hockenheim junction and Neulußheim was added to the B 39 . Furthermore, the so far southernmost section from Rastatt via Kehl to the A 5 in Lahr has been downgraded to state road 75. Before that, as is customary with such transfers of construction loads, the federal government had rehabilitated the street. The A 5 is an alternative.

Other events

In the fall of 2003, a sniper shot at random cars passing by, seriously injuring a young woman, among others. After he struck a second time in the Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen area, the police offered a reward of 5,000 euros. However, no further traces or indications were found and no further incidents occurred.
