Like the "Lords of Gryffenberg", the castle was first documented in 1223. The castle and the lower court rights over Bäretswil were first given to the Counts of Rapperswil by the Abbot of St. Gallen . From 1321 to 1507 the rights as Habsburg pledges were held by the Lords of Hinwil .
