The Castle Rossberg is an Outbound hill castle (Motte) south of Winterthur in the area of Winterthur outer guard Rossberg , near the village of Kemptthal . At that time, the castle owned the courtyard with the Rossberg chapel , which is located about 800 meters north of the castle and still exists today.

history

History of the castle

The Rossberg family was first mentioned in 1169, when the brothers Burkhard and Ekkehard "de Rosseberc" appeared as followers of the Counts of Kyburg in a deed of gift . In 1180 two brothers Heinrich and Ulrich von Rossberg appeared as witnesses in the settlement of a dispute between the Counts of Kyburg and the Oberwinterthur church .

In 1241, Count Hartmann V von Kyburg transferred the income from the chapel to his wife Margaretha von Savoyen. Three years later he bequeathed, among other things, Rossberg Castle to the Bishop of Strasbourg . The name Rossberg appears for the first time in the city of Zurich in 1256. The family was last mentioned three years later, when Suevo von Rossberg attested a document in the Töss monastery , which is not far away. However, it cannot be determined whether the castle is still inhabited at this point in time or when it was abandoned.

What is certain, however, is that the Bishop of Constance, when reassigning the benefice of the Rossberg Chapel in 1266 , stated that Rossberg Castle had already been "long destroyed".

Excavation by dowsers in 1552

In 1552 the castle was visited by the dowser Martin Offner from Sierre . Hoping to find treasure, he dug up the whole area and destroyed it permanently. What has remained from this campaign is the field name "Schatz" for the castle hill and rubble piles made from Bollensteinen in the south of the facility.

Archaeological investigations 1908

In 1908 archaeological excavations took place on the castle hill under the direction of the teacher Emil Stauber . The foundations of a residential tower were found, as well as a sandstone block in the southern part of this building, which Stauber interpreted as a kitchen stove. Sheep shears were also found and sparse smaller finds were made. Since the remains of the wall were not preserved, they have largely crumbled today and can hardly be recognized as such.
