Sünikon ruins

The ruin Sünikon is the ruin of a hillside castle southwest of Sünikon in the district of Dielsdorf , canton of Zurich in Switzerland.

location

The simple tower castle with a floor plan of 12.5 by 11.9 meters was located directly on the frequently used pilgrimage route from the Upper Rhine to Einsiedeln Monastery , 100 meters above the bottom of the Wehntal on the northern slope of the Lägern .

history

Documents mention a knight family von Sünikon as followers of the Regensbergs in the 13th and 14th centuries; after 1397 their traces are lost.

During excavations in 1961, when a forest road was being built in the so-called Pflasterwiese , the remains of the wall of the almost square building were found. Up to the summer of 1962, the walls, which are up to 1.3 meters thick, were exposed. In the rubble of the filled cellar, there were parts of ceramic dishes and tiled stoves , remains of pointed arched windows made of sandstone and a few metal finds such as tools and nails from the 15th to 17th centuries.

However, no objects from the Sünikon knighthood were found and so it is assumed that it is more the pilgrim hostel that was operated there until the 17th century. The pilgrimage chapel Maria Pflasterbach from the 16th century, mentioned in many writings, is also believed to be in the area .

On Jos Murer's canton map from 1566, a castle with the name Sünikon is shown as a ruin next to the Pflasterbach chapel. This leads to the assumption that the pilgrims' hostel on Pflasterbach actually stood on the foundation walls of the Sünikon castle.
