Maur Castle (Canton of Zurich)
Maur Castle

The castle Maur is a small castle in Maur in the district Uster in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland.

history

On the lowest terrace of the pan handle is the village of Maur am Greifensee with the castle Maur a little above. Built around 1250 as a brick, square residential tower with a side length of 8.9 meters and on 1.40 meters thick foundation walls made of Bollenstones and hewn corner blocks.

The castle served as the administrative seat of the Fraumünster Abbey of Zurich by the Meier von Maur. These once sat on the Meierhof next door and had the lower jurisdiction. The high jurisdiction from 1652 to 1775 lay with the Landvogtei Greifensee , but the blood court was in the hands of the Kyburger until the transition to Zurich.

The castle later became the free property of Meier von Maur. In the 15th century the castle was separated, until then it formed a unit with the Meierhof. In 1460 Junker Johannes Engelhard von Zürich acquired the entire Beitz, but after 15 years he sold everything to Junker Georg Grebel from Zürich, and he in turn on May 1st, 1592 to Felix Hottinger von Maur. Now the owners changed constantly, the names are mentioned: Aeppli, Burkhard, Kramer, Füßli, Ziegler, Nüscheler and then in 1749 the famous copper engraver David Herrliberger .

Herrliberger era

Maur Castle around 1741 after an engraving by David Herrliberger.

David Herrliberger added an annex to the castle in 1750. It became his residence and place of publication, but his authority as a judge was limited. The autocratic administration led to tensions with the village population and the superior Landvogt von Greifensee .

In 1775 Herrliberger sold the jurisdiction and the castle Maur for 8000 guilders to the farmer Hans-Jakob Zollinger from Uessikon, but the jurisdiction went to Zurich.

Modern times

The castle was enlarged around 1800 and converted into a manorial house, and around 1850 a stairwell was added.

It has been owned by the municipality of Maur since 1962. The latter had the castle extensively renovated in 1974/75 and converted into a museum. The Herrliberger Collection and part of the Mühle local museum have been in permanent exhibition here since 1976, with a Salomon cabinet and art chamber in the castle for temporary exhibitions. A copperplate engraver and a letterpress workshop have been set up in the castle cellar.
