The COVID-19 pandemic has been occurring in Saxony-Anhalt since 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic and in particular the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany . The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases .

On March 10, 2020, the Robert Koch Institute confirmed the first seven COVID-19 infections in Saxony-Anhalt. From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

On March 13th, Saxony-Anhalt ordered a state-wide school closure from March 16th. Emergency care was subsequently set up for children whose parents work in systemically important professions.

The state administration office of Saxony-Anhalt issued a general ruling on March 22nd, according to which leaving the apartment is only permitted with “good reason”. The ordinance is initially limited to April 5th.

In Halle (Saale) the disaster was declared on March 18, 2020, which remained in force until April 13, 2020.

Halle was the first city in Saxony-Anhalt to require a mask to be worn. It was valid from April 14, 2020 for the weekly market. On April 21, 2020, the state government decided that from April 23, a mask is mandatory in Saxony-Anhalt . The decision was criticized by Magdeburg's Lord Mayor Lutz Trümper and the AfD parliamentary group. In contrast, the mask requirement was welcomed by Alexander S. Kekulé .

By § 1 of the "Fifth Ordinance on Measures to Curb the Spread of the New Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in Saxony-Anhalt" from May 2, 2020, up to five people from different households are permitted with effect from May 4, 2020 to gather in "public and non-public events, outdoor and indoor gatherings, elevators, gatherings and gatherings".
