biography

Early years

Poland played guitar since high school and had a rock / jazz band called Welkin there. After moving to New York , he played in a fusion jazz band called the New Yorkers from 1977 to 1982 , which gained some attention due to its technically sophisticated playing style. Gar Samuelson , who later played for Megadeth, sat there on drums .

Megadeth

After Gar Samuelson joined Megadeth, which had been founded a year earlier, in 1984, Poland saw the band play at a concert. After the show, he went backstage, played spontaneously in Megadeth before and soon became a permanent member, the meantime, the assisting Kerry King of Slayer replacing. In 1985 Megadeth's debut Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good! . However, he had to leave the band on the tour for the album, as he consumed drugs to a greater extent. In the meantime, Mark Albert joined the band for him. In 1986 Poland returned to the band to do Peace Sells… But Who's Buying? to record, an album that is counted among the most important Thrash albums.

As problems with drug use worsened and tensions with bandmates Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson increased, Chris Poland was released in July 1987 along with Samuelson. Mustaine later wrote the song Liar (from So Far, So Good… So What! ) About Poland and referred it to him during live performances.

1990s

After a successful drug withdrawal, Chris Poland played bass with the punk band Circle Jerks for some time . In 1990 he released his first solo album, Return to Metalopolis . Shortly before, he had recorded demos with Megadeth for their fourth album Rust in Peace , but declined the offer to get back on track. Sun rose Marty Friedman one with Megadeth, which some of Polands ideas for Rust in Peace took over.

In the 1990s, Poland played for the progressive rock band Damn the Machine , with whom he released their debut and another promo record in 1993 . After staff changes, the band reformed as Mumbo's Brain, but broke up in 1995.

2000s

In 2000 Chris Poland released his second album, Chasing the Sun , which was followed by a compilation called Rare Trax that same year . Return to Metalopolis - Live was released in 2007 , with a live performance of the 1990 solo debut.

Furthermore, Poland plays in the jazz / fusion band OHM: . With this he released a total of three albums in 2003, 2004 and 2008 and a DVD in 2006. In 2003 he performed a solo on the album As The Palaces Burn by Lamb of God , and the following year he also contributed a guitar solo to the band's next record, Ashes of the Wake .

Surprisingly, Dave Mustaine asked Chris Poland to record the Megadeth album The System Has Failed in 2004 , which Poland then recorded on a contract basis without becoming a member again. He did this especially because of the collaboration with drummer Vinnie Colaiuta , whom Mustaine had hired. As a result, there was a conflict about payment, which has now been resolved.

In 2008 Poland was heard on Misty Mountain Hop: A Millennium Tribute to Led Zeppelin by hard rock band Harry Slash & The Slashtones , and in 2009 on the compilation Guitars That Ate My Brain . Also in 2009 Poland founded its side project OHMPHREY with Robertino Pagliari from OHM and three members of the prog rock band Umphrey's McGee . The project's debut album was released in May 2009.

style

Chris Poland has a severed tendon on the index finger of his grasping hand, which allows him to perform some unusually wide grips, but is also limited in other areas. He is known for his accurate rhythm guitar playing as well as finger picking and sophisticated solo play.
