Youthanasia is the sixth studio album by the US metal band Megadeth . It was released on Capitol Records in November 1994 . On the album, the band continues the course of its predecessor Countdown to Extinction , which is characterized by mid-tempo metal pieces , and almost completely dispenses with thrash and speed elements, although it could not quite achieve its commercial success despite good sales figures.

Emergence

After the very successful album Countdown to Extinction , Megadeth, especially bandleader Dave Mustaine on Youthanasia , tried to find the "formula for success" in songs of medium speed and largely without fast elements and extended solo passages. This went so far that producer Max Norman set the speed of most songs to 120 beats per minute with the metronome, because he held the theory that hits should have this speed. The creation process of the album was recorded on the home video Evolver - The Making of Youthanasia . As singles were Train of Consequences and À Tout le Monde decoupled. However, MTV refused to play the video for the latter song. The background was that the manager of the band was working with Wayne Isham , despite Mustaines' warning , to whom the broadcaster was not good to speak. According to Mustaine, the latter sent the video under a false name, but this was noticed. In 2007, Mustaine recorded a new, slightly faster version for the album United Abominations with Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil .

reception

Despite the change in style and the fact that the band increasingly alienated Thrash fans, the album received passable to good feedback. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from allmusic .com complained about the lack of experimental, progressive elements in the music, which are not missed in sledgehammer riffs such as Train of Consequences . It awarded three out of five stars. On the occasion of the re-release, Jason Birchmeier praised the music on the album, especially songs like À Tout le Monde , which is one of the best pieces by the band. However, good music doesn't always lead to satisfied fans. In Rock Hard , "Buffo" Schnädelbach awarded 8.5 out of ten points and called Youthanasia a "good album", which is due to Dave Sustaines "excellent feeling for fine melodies and good riffs". "Patience" with the album is necessary given the sometimes "demanding songs".
