Derry ( Irish Doire ) was one of the 26 Northern Irish districts that existed from 1973 to 2015, and was in the traditional county of Londonderry . The district was formed in 1973 from the County Borough Londonderry , which included the actual city of Derry or Londonderry , and the Rural District Londonderry , to which the rural area belonged. In addition to the city of Derry, the places Culmore , Newbuildings , Strathfoyle and Eglinton were in the district today .
The district formed in 1973 was initially called Londonderry , but was officially renamed Derry in 1984 . Since the actual city of Derry has the status of a city , the administrative authority of the entire district was called Derry City Council .
On April 1, 2015 Derry went on in the new District Derry and Strabane .
