The Division 1 1966/67 was the 29th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the AS Saint-Etienne , making their third title since 1957 won.
The first game day was August 20, 1966, the last game day was June 10, 1967. There was a “winter break” from December 19 to January 7.
societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than in 16th place were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the two winners of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( Racing Lens , US Valenciennes-Anzin , OSC Lille relegation winner ),
- three from Paris and Champagne-Ardenne (the renamed Stade Paris FC , which this season merged from UA Sedan-Torcy and Racing Paris Racing Paris-Sedan , promoted Stade Reims ),
- two from the northeast ( FC Sochaux , Racing Strasbourg ),
- four from the northwest ( FC Rouen , Stade Rennes UC , defending champions FC Nantes , SCO Angers ),
- two from the southwest ( Toulouse FC , Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , relegation winner Olympique Nîmes , promoted Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , AS Monaco ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
Over the entire season, Nantes as the reigning champions and Saint-Étienne delivered a “splendid duel”. In the first half of the season, the defending champion was usually at the top, and Lens in particular managed to keep up with the two opponents. The autumn championship, however, already went to the “Greens”, while the “Canaries” - these are the names used in the press for Saint-Étienne and Nantes up to the present day - made too many draws; Even the 1: 4 defeat in the top game at the end of March 1967 did not bring ASSE back off the title course. Their personnel changes before the start of the season (installation of several 19 or 20-year-olds such as Larqué , Bereta , Revelli around the “corset poles” Bosquier , Herbin and Mekhloufi ) turned out to be highly successful in the short term and in the future.
Behind these two clubs, Angers led the very broad midfield after the end of the back series; Up to the present (2012), the SCO never achieved a better ranking than this third place. In the basement of the table, France experienced the "total disintegration" of the last - the "artificial Paris-Sedan fusion" played its home games in Sedan 250 kilometers away - pure capital city clubs, Stade Paris, which scored 18 goals in 38 games and only their own audience with two home wins disappointed. The traditional club was accompanied to Division 2 by another team that was even more successful in the past : Stade Reims only stayed one season in the upper house of football. After the Barrages , Nîmes was also relegated, while Toulouse was able to keep the league in sport - and still not compete in the top division for a decade and a half. The Téfécé sold his license to Red Star Olympique , 1966/67 only third from bottom of the second division, which was just as well represented for the following season as the promoted AC Ajaccio , FC Metz and, via the detour of relegation, AS Aix .
