Division 1 1972/73

The Division 1 1973-74 was the 36th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the first time since 1970 again the AS Saint-Etienne that their total seventh title since 1957 won.

The first game day was August 7, 1973, the last game day was May 25, 1974. There was a “mini winter break” from December 23 to January 6.

societies

Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, as well as three direct promoters from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. Each team received an additional bonus point regardless of the outcome of the game for each game in which they had scored at least three goals; this should encourage attacking football.

In the first half of the season it was shown that Saint-Étienne had succeeded in rebuilding his team, in which several 20-year-olds played; but at the end of the first half of the season, ASSE was only one point ahead of Angers and two over Nantes and Lens. The SCOA had developed into a serious competitor, mainly thanks to its gambler Guillou and the best attack of Division 1 , from which the striker troika Antić / Berdoll / Edwige stood out. Berdoll scored all four goals in Angers' 4-0 first leg win over Saint-Étienne, a number that Braun had also achieved 5-1 over the eventual champions this season at Metz. But in the second half of the season Angers was too often "bought off". And Nantes kept pace even longer before Saint-Étienne was able to break away with a final spurt - only one defeat in the last 14 games. After completing the point games, the young team from Saint-Étienne also won the cup final and thus the third doublé in their club history.

The bonus point regulation meant a certain problem for some weak attacking teams and cost Rennes - the Bretons benefited from this novelty for the first time on matchday 27 - and Nîmes, the team with the best defense, a place in the top third of the table. But the associated hope for a noticeable increase in the number of goals and the attractiveness of the league was not fulfilled. Even in the razor-thin relegation battle - in the end only two points separated the eleventh from the eighteenth - it ultimately had no effect. After the final whistle of his last meeting of the season, Nancy believed that she was already saved because the 3-1 win over Lyon even gave the Lorraine three points. But shortly afterwards the results of the rivals arrived: Troyes had trailed 0: 4 in Sedan until ten minutes before the end, but then scored three more goals, and Monaco also got under the wheels in Reims, but “only” 4-8 . Thus, all three clubs each received their eighth bonus point. Nancy could therefore only make up the two points for the win and had to relegate to Division 2 together with Paris and Sedan due to the poorer goal difference . From there, the OSC Lille , Red Star FC and Paris Saint-Germain returned to the first division for the following season .
