history

Individual finds indicate that the area north of the camps was already populated during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Aradingin was first mentioned in a document in 1040. The name comes from the Old High German Arinratingun and means "among the people of the Arinrat". In the 11th century the Einsiedeln monastery acquired large estates. The Elchingen monastery near Ulm exchanged its properties with the Sankt Blasien monastery in 1150 . In the course of time the Wettingen Monastery assumed a dominant position. With the name in Eredingen villa inferiori , the smaller Unterehrendingen was distinguished from the larger Oberehrendingen for the first time in a document in 1261. The rulers were the Habsburgs .

In 1415 the Swiss conquered Aargau and Ehrendingen was henceforth the capital of the district of the same name in the county of Baden , a common rule . The governor of Baden exercised both lower jurisdiction and blood jurisdiction . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Ehrendingen was initially a municipality in the short-lived canton of Baden and in 1803 became part of the newly founded canton of Aargau.

In 1825 things of honor were divided into the independent communities of Ober- and Unterehrendingen. Both villages, which at that time were still spatially separated, were ravaged by large fires; 1821 in Ober- and 1832 in Unterehrendingen, where the schoolhouse was also cremated. From 1892 to 1902 the Lägern cement factory employed up to 400 workers. Until the 1950s the population grew only slightly, in Unterehrendingen it even decreased at times. But then, due to the proximity to Baden and Zurich , increased construction activity began. The population increased rapidly and the buildings grew together. The two villages gradually developed a common identity and decided to reunite in 2003. On January 1, 2006, after an interruption of 181 years, the Ehrendingen community was re-established.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Split from blue with a yellow stag stepping out of the dividing line and from white with a torn green fir tree." The coat of arms, introduced on January 1, 2006, combines deer and fir, the symbols of the coats of arms of Ober- and Unterehrendingen. The deer stands for the monastery of St. Blasien, which also had this animal in its coat of arms. The meaning of the fir tree is not known.

traffic

Main road 17 runs between Döttingen and Dielsdorf on the far northern edge of the village . From there, Kantonsstrasse 279 branches off to Baden , while Kantonsstrasse 428 connects to Freienwil . The village is accessed by three postbus lines that run from Baden train station to Döttingen, Tegerfelden and Kaiserstuhl . On weekends there is a night bus from the train station via Ehrendingen and Klingnau to Bad Zurzach . In 1915 a continuation of the railway line ending in Niederweningen through the Surb valley to Döttingen was planned, which would also have had a stop in Unterehrendingen. This line, known under the working title of the Surb Valley Railway, was never built.
