Elisabetta Trenta (born June 4, 1967 in Velletri near Rome ) is an Italian university professor , development cooperation and security expert and politician of the MoVimento 5 Stelle .

From June 2018 to September 2019 she was Italy's Defense Minister in the Conte I cabinet .

Life

Trenta holds a degree in political science from La Sapienza University in Rome. In 1996 she obtained a Masters in International Development Cooperation and in 2008 a Masters in Intelligence and Security . She is captain of the reserve (capitano della riserva selezionata) of the Italian army , in whose training facilities she completed various courses. From 1994 she was involved in various development projects abroad, particularly in Iraq and Lebanon , where she also served as an advisor to Italian military contingents.

From 1990 to 1997 Trenta worked as an administrative clerk in an electrical engineering company in Velletri, after which she worked for a development cooperation cooperative in Rome for around 20 years. In 2015 she became a lecturer at Link Campus, a private university in Rome . Her work at this university focused on development cooperation, project management , EU structural funds , geopolitics and security policy . In addition, she received research assignments from the Center for Strategic Studies (CeMISS) of the General Staff Academy CASD in 2016 and 2017 .

Trenta ran for a Senate seat in the parliamentary elections on March 4, 2018 , but without success. Her party had already accepted her as defense minister in her shadow cabinet before the election . On June 1, 2018, Elisabetta Trenta replaced Roberta Pinotti as Minister of Defense, making her the second woman to head this ministry. Trenta is married to an officer who, at the time of the parliamentary elections and the formation of the government, was working in an organizational unit of the Ministry of Defense that is responsible, among other things, for military procurement. Shortly after taking office, Trenta transferred her husband to another department because of evidence of possible conflicts of interest .

In addition to Italian and English, Trenta also speaks some French and Russian, and has a basic knowledge of Spanish and Arabic.
