Roberta Pinotti (born May 20, 1961 in Genoa ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico . From February 22, 2014 to June 1, 2018, she was Minister of Defense of Italy .

Life

After studying literature, Pinotti worked as an Italian teacher at various high schools. Her political career began in the early 1990s, when she was elected city councilor in her hometown of Genoa . From 1993 to 1997 she was responsible for school, youth and social affairs in the government of the province of Genoa , and from 1997 to 1999 she was a deputy for schools in the city of Genoa. From 1999 to 2001 she was provincial chairman of the Left Democrats .

In May 2001, Roberta Pinotti moved into the Italian Chamber of Deputies , where she first worked in the Committee on Budgets and from April 2002 on in the Defense Committee. After the general election in 2006, she was elected chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Defense Committee, making her the first woman to hold this post. In the early parliamentary elections in 2008, she ran for the Senate , where she became deputy chairman of the local defense committee in 2010. After the parliamentary elections in 2013, after which she again entered the Senate, she became State Secretary in the Letta Cabinet in the Ministry of Defense on May 3, 2013 .

On February 22, 2014, Roberta Pinotti became Minister of Defense in the Renzi government . She was the first woman to head the Italian Ministry of Defense. After the parliamentary elections on March 4, 2018, she was replaced by Elisabetta Trenta .
