Vito Lattanzio (born October 31, 1926 in Bari , Apulia , † October 31, 2010 ibid) was an Italian politician of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC).

Life

After attending school, he studied medicine and later worked as a surgeon . He began his political career as a candidate for the Democrazia Cristiana in 1958, when he was first elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ) . In this he represented the interests of the constituency of Bari until 1992 .

In April 1970, Prime Minister Mariano Rumor made him Undersecretary in the Ministry of Defense and held this office in the subsequent cabinets of Prime Ministers Emilio Colombo and Giulio Andreotti until June 1972. He also held the post of Undersecretary in the Ministry of Defense in the 4th cabinet of Prime Minister Rumor held between July 1973 and March 1974.

On July 29, 1977, Prime Minister Andreotti appointed him Minister of Defense of Italy . From this position he resigned on 18 September 1977 after the commander of the Security Police (Sipo) and the SD in Rome during the Nazi era , Herbert Kappler , one month before the escape from the military hospital, Ospedale Militare Celio in Rome and then in the Federal Republic of Germany succeeded.

Subsequently, however, he took over the post of Minister of Transport in the Andreotti government and held this post until March 11, 1978. Between 1983 and April 1988 he was Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies.

On April 13, 1988 he was appointed by Prime Minister Ciriaco De Mita as Minister without Portfolio with the coordination of civil protection in his cabinet. He then also held this position in Andreotti's 6th cabinet until April 12, 1991. His last position was between April 12, 1991 and April 24, 1992, Minister for Foreign Trade in Andreotti's 7th government.
