The Dafabet English Open in 2017 were a world ranking tournament at the Snooker - season 2017/18 and were from 16 to 22 October 2017 at the Metrodome from Barnsley in England held. Qualifying rounds for other Main Tour tournaments had already taken place there, and for the first time the northern English city hosted a complete tournament. The English Open marked the start of the second Home Nations series , which had been launched the previous year.

The 2016 winner was Liang Wenbo . He was eliminated in the round of 32 against fellow countryman Yan Bingtao . The finals reached Ronnie O'Sullivan and Kyren Wilson . O'Sullivan won 9-2 and took his 29th world rankings title.

Liang Wenbo scored the 132nd official maximum break in Round 2 . There had already been a 147 break at the tournament last year . For Liang it was the second maximum in his career.

Prize money

The prize money is the same for all four tournaments in the Home Nations series and is in the middle of all Main Tour tournaments. It remained unchanged compared to the previous year. If a player wins all four tournaments in the series in one season, he will also receive a special prize of 1 million pounds.

Tournament results

Due to the high number of participants, a pre-qualification had to be scheduled for the first time at a Home Nations tournament. There, four players drawn from the 129 professionals and two wildcard players from the English Association ( David Lilley and Joe O'Connor ) competed against each other in pairs. The three winners went into the first round with the remaining 125 professionals. Up to the round of 16, four winning frames ( Best of 7 mode ) were played.

O'Sullivan had the better start of the match, Wilson was able to hold against it at 1-1 and 3-2, then the five-time world champion pulled away 6-2 at the end of the session. In the evening, O'Sullivan got the first contested frame and then finished with two century breaks to a clear 9-2 victory. For Wilson it was the third consecutive defeat in the final.
