Tournament schedule

128 professional players had registered for the tournament. So no amateurs came into play as substitutes as in previous years, but no pre-qualification was necessary, as in the tournaments earlier this season. The first round was held on the three days of November from Tuesday to Thursday. Friday was free and from Saturday the remaining 64 players continued to play. The television broadcast also began with round 2 on Saturday.

First round to round of 16

There were a few surprise winners in the first round. So the set at No. 2 was Ding Junhui with 6: 5 of Leo Fernandez beaten, who was set to place 127th Another surprise came from the 1992 UK Champion Jimmy White , who was placed in 118th place, beating Ali Carter , who was placed in 11th place, 6-2.

In the second round, last year's winner and reigning world champion Mark Selby was eliminated 3: 6 against Scott Donaldson, who was in 64th place .

The surprise of the third round was Graeme Dott's 6-2 victory over world number three Judd Trump , who had previously won his two matches 6-0. The three best in the world rankings had already been eliminated. In addition, Lü Haotian (ranked 104th) defeated Marco Fu, who was ranked 8th, 6: 4. In addition, 2015 winner Neil Robertson lost 5-6 to Mark Joyce . The Australian fell out of the top 16 of the world rankings for the first time in more than 10 years and can therefore not take part in the Masters .

In the round of 16 there was almost a surprise because Ronnie O'Sullivan (ranked 7th) was only able to prevail against Akani Songsermsawad (ranked 87), who dominated the game at times and took the lead several times.

Quarter-finals to finals

After the early elimination of the four best-placed players (with John Higgins 5: 6 in the last sixteen against Mark King ), the higher-placed players were able to prevail until the final. Despite Ronnie O'Sullivan's slightly lower placement , he started as a clear favorite against Shaun Murphy . After Murphy was able to win the first frame with a high century break, the afternoon session ended 4: 4 despite a brief 2-frame lead O'Sullivans and reflected the excellent condition of both opponents. After the evening session started equally evenly, O'Sullivan increasingly managed to take advantage of his opponent's mistakes and won the last 5 frames from 5: 5 to win the trophy for the sixth time 24 years after his first UK Championship victory. Both players finished the game with a hole rate of over 90% and impressed at times with a brilliant safety game and holes even for very long balls.
