2003

The UK Championship 2002 was a snooker tournament that was held from December 1st to 15th, 2002 at the Barbican Center in York . The world number one Mark J. Williams won the title for the second time since 1999. He defeated Ken Doherty in the final 10: 9. The Irishman had already played the final last year, but clearly lost with 1:10. Doherty is the only player who has reached the final three times without being able to win the title.

Prize money

After the outlier of over three quarters of a million £ in prize money in the previous year, the amount of money distributed fell significantly again. Nevertheless, it remained the second highest amount awarded to date. The cuts affected all players on a pro rata basis, with the tournament winner receiving £ 15,500 less than the 2001 winner.

Main tournament

The main 48-player tournament began on December 1st in York.

Round 1

The shortening of the first round to best-of-13 was reversed after only one year and all games except for the final were played again in best-of-17 mode. 16 players were already seeded for the second round, the remaining 32 competed against each other in round 1.
