history

The diocese was detached on April 8, 1808 as a diocese with the areas of Massachusetts , Maine , New Hampshire , Rhode Island , Connecticut and Vermont from the Archdiocese of Baltimore , in whose ecclesiastical province it was incorporated at the same time. After the diocese of Hartford was taken out of its territory on November 28, 1843, the dioceses of Burlington and Portland were founded on July 29, 1853 . On June 14, 1870 the establishment of the Diocese of Springfield followed and on February 16, 1872 a further loss of territory for the new diocese of Providence . On February 12, the diocese of Boston was raised to the archbishopric, to whose ecclesiastical province today the dioceses of Burlington, Fall River , Manchester , Portland, Springfield and Worcester belong.

Numerous abuse lawsuits against priests of the diocese not only led to Archbishop Bernard Francis Law's resignation in 2002 , but also to a quasi bankruptcy of the diocese, whose new Archbishop Seán Patrick O'Malley even had to sell the bishop's house to Boston College in 2004 .
