Located in the United States , the Archdiocese of San Francisco ( Latin Archidioecesis Sancti Francisci , English Archdiocese of San Francisco ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church . It was detached from the diocese of Monterey as an archbishopric on July 29, 1853 .

The counties of San Francisco , Marin and San Mateo now belong to the area of the archdiocese .

history

The forerunner of the archbishopric was the diocese of Monterey in California , which was founded on April 27, 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Apostolicam sollicitudinem from cession of territory of the Diocese of Sonora as a diocese of both California and was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Mexico City as a suffragan . The diocese of both California was divided after the cession of Mexico in the Mexican-American War on November 20, 1849 and the now American northern part was renamed the Diocese of Monterey . On July 29, 1853, the diocese of Monterey gave up parts of its territory to establish the Archdiocese of San Francisco, to which it was subordinated as a suffragan.

After the Apostolic Vicariate of Marysville was detached from the Archdiocese on September 27, 1860 , on May 28, 1886 it gave up some areas to the newly established Diocese of Sacramento , and in 1887 the Apostolic Vicariate of Utah was separated . On January 13, 1962, the bishoprics of Oakland and Santa Rosa were established as independent bishoprics on his diocesan territory. At the same time, some areas were ceded to the new Stockton diocese . On January 27, 1981, the Diocese of San Jose in California was founded from areas of the Archdiocese of San Francisco .

The diocese area today only includes San Francisco and the counties of San Mateo and Marin .
