Map of the Ecclesiastical Province of Philadelphia

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia ( Latin : Archidioecesis Philadelphiensis ), located in the US state of Pennsylvania , was founded on April 8, 1808 from areas of the Baltimore diocese and was subject to this as a suffragan diocese.

After the diocese of Pittsburgh was taken out of it on August 11, 1843 , it also gave up some areas on July 29, 1853 to establish what was then the diocese of Newark (New Jersey). As early as March 3, 1868, it again lost large areas to establish the Pennsylvania bishoprics of Harrisburg and Scranton and the bishopric of Wilmington (Delaware and East Maryland).

Elevated to the archbishopric and metropolitan seat on February 12, 1875, the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Scranton, Wilmington, Allentown , Altoona-Johnstown , Erie and Greensburg (all in Pennsylvania) are now subordinate to him .

The Archbishop of Philadelphia, who is usually a cardinal, is assisted by four auxiliary bishops .
