The Adana Airport ( Turk. Adana Şakirpaşa Havalimanı ) is by passenger traffic the sixth largest airport of Turkey . It is located in the western part of the city of Adana , in the Şakirpaşa district, which is part of the Seyhan district . In 2019 the airport handled over 5 million passengers.
history
The airport opened in 1937. It was named after the Ottoman Vali Şakirpaşa, who made the region an economic center through numerous projects and increased the quality of life for the residents. The airport was used both militarily and civilly from the start, but three quarters of the flight movements were made up of military aircraft. This hardly changed until 1956. From then on the airport was also approved for international flights. 1957 saw a 90% increase in passenger numbers. By 1992 the numbers flattened out more and more. Therefore, the DHMI, the airport operator, decided to reorient the airport. Advertising campaigns were started, the infrastructure improved and new buildings built. In 1997 the new terminal for international flights was opened. In 1998 for the first time over a million passengers flew via / from Adana and since then the number of passengers has grown more or less constant. In 2019 there was a decline in annual passenger numbers for the first time since 2008, with a total decrease of 10% compared to the previous year.
When Çukurova Airport goes into operation, Adana Airport will be shut down and demolished. That is also the reason why little has been renewed for about 20 years.
Airport grounds
The airport has a terminal with a capacity of 4.5 million passengers per year, a control tower and an active paved runway with an instrument flight landing system (ILS). The apron can accommodate up to 28 narrow-body aircraft. [3] There is a parking lot for 569 cars in front of the terminal. The airport was one of the first handicapped accessible airports in Turkey. The airport can be reached by car, taxi or bus.
