Günter Hujara (born June 9, 1952 in Neuenbürg , Baden-Württemberg ) is a former German skiing official and trainer. After working as a DSV trainer, he was the race director of the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) from 1993 to 2014, responsible for the men's races in the Alpine Ski World Cup .

biography

Günter Hujara comes from Neuenbürg in the northern Black Forest . In his youth he successfully competed in several races for the Neuenbürg Ski Club. For example, in 1969 in Steinlach near Mössingen, he won one of the first nationwide grass ski races in the youth class. In 1970 he was also named district champion in giant slalom in the youth class, making him the only one from the Calw district that year.

The trained geography and sports instructor began his career in professional ski racing in 1976 with the German Ski Association (DSV). After he had been head coach of the German women's speed team in the 1980s, he moved to the FIS World Federation in 1991 . For two years Hujara was the responsible functionary for the ladies together with the Austrian Kurt Hoch. In 1993 he succeeded Karl Frehsner as race director in the men's world cup and was henceforth responsible for the safety and technical handling of the races. Due to his resolute nature, he often clashed with athletes in this role, for example with Hermann Maier , who was disqualified twice for minor rule violations, or with Bode Miller and Didier Cuche , whose safety concerns he did not always share. However, Hujara mostly retained the upper hand, which earned him nicknames such as "World Cup conductor" or "Tamer of the alpha animals".

On June 10, 2013, Hujara announced at an FIS conference in Dubrovnik that he would resign from his position as race director after the 2013/14 Olympic season . During the team captains' meeting on March 15, 2014, he was bid farewell and handed over to the South Tyrolean Markus Waldner . As a result, Hujara stayed with the FIS as an expert for “special projects” and - with a view to the Olympic Games 2018 and 2022 - pushed the development of alpine skiing in South Korea and China . For example, he was involved in training specialists and building the infrastructure at the Jeongseon Alpine Center .

Günter Hujara is married and has two daughters. Maike Hujara (* 1984) took place in the 2004/05 season both on the ski cross - World Cup and at the World Championships in Ruka , where she was ranked 21st Svenja Hujara (* 1986) competed in a number of junior alpine ski races.
