Minaret of Jam

Ghor , also Ghur or Ghwor ( Pashto / Dari :غور) is a province in Afghanistan with about 700,000 inhabitants.

location

The central Afghan province is located at around 2000 to 2500 m altitude on the Hari Rud river. The provincial capital is called Chaghcharan (or Chighcheran ).

The infrastructure is below the national average. Airfields can be found in Chaghcharan (IATA: CCN) and Taywara.

history

Since the 11th century Ghor was a province of the Ghaznavid Empire . The province of Ghor was of central importance in the second half of the 12th century under the jointly ruling brothers Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad (r. 1163-1202) and Muhammad von Ghur (r. 1163-1206), who succeeded in their sphere of influence to extend to Persia on the one hand and Bengal on the other. After her death, the Ghurid Empire only existed for a few years.

Attractions

The minaret of Jam , or Firuzkur , built around 1175 , is a major attraction in the Ghor province, it is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage .
