Nuristan ( Pashto / Dari :نورستان, DMG Nūristān , German "Land of Enlightenment", before Islamization in 1896 Kafiristan ) is a province ( velayat ) in eastern Afghanistan on the south side of the Hindu Kush .

It was formed in 2001 from the northern parts of the provinces Laghman and Kunar and has 160,993 inhabitants (2019 calculation). The majority of the population are Nuristani , i.e. speakers of Nuristani languages .

The capital of Nuristan is Parun .
