history

In 1977 the residents of Guruça fled from the Indonesian invaders to the Matebian . There they settled in a resistance base ( base de apoio ). In October 1978, the Indonesian attacks on the base began. Up to 800 people died in Guruça alone as a result of heavy bombing from the air. On November 22nd, the FALINTIL was overrun by the invaders. You can still visit caves that were used by the resistance fighters as refuge.

As early as May 1978, 500 residents of Guruça had surrendered after they had returned from Matebian. Although many were ill and weak, men were forced to work for the Indonesian army or the Hansip or had to serve as TBOs ( Tenaga Bantuan Operasi , surgical assistants). Women were obliged to watch over night. TBOs had to accompany the troops to the front lines and carry ammunition and equipment. At times they also served as scouts and guides, sometimes also as spies in the zones held by the FALINTIL.

At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian camp in Guruça for East Timorese, who were to be relocated by the occupiers for better control. Sucos residents were forcibly relocated to Mulia (Laga administrative office). It was feared that the villages that were close to the forests could support the FALINTIL. The old houses were burned down after the evacuation, fields were destroyed and the cattle were killed. Several residents were injured. The inhabitants were brought to Mulia on trucks under heavy guard.

The pro-Indonesian Team Saka militia burned down several houses in Guruça on September 8, 1999, during Operation Donner , and killed the cattle. On September 9th, a youth was killed by them.
