Henry Wilbur Bentley
Henry Wilbur Bentley (born September 30, 1838 in DeRuyter , New York , † January 27, 1907 in Boonville , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Henry Wilbur Bentley was born in Madison County about eight years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . The family moved to Morrisville . He attended Union School , the Yates Polytechnic Institute in Chittenango, and Judd's Private School in Berkshire . He then taught at a school for several years. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1861, he began practicing in Boonville. The following years were overshadowed by the civil war. He presided over the Oneida County Building Commission . Then he held the post of President of Boonville in 1874, between 1889 and 1891 and 1899. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .
In the congressional elections of 1890 for the 52nd Congress , Bentley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd constituency of New York , where he succeeded James S. Sherman on March 4, 1891 . In 1892 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and then left the Congress on March 3, 1893 .
After his time in Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Boonville, which he exercised until his death. He died there about seven years before the outbreak of the First World War . His body was then interred in Boonville Cemetery .
