Elisha Litchfield (born July 12, 1785 in Canterbury , Connecticut , † August 4, 1859 in Cazenovia , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1825 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elisha Litchfield was born in Canterbury, Windham County , about two years after the War of Independence . He attended community schools. Then he did an apprenticeship as a carpenter. He moved to Onondaga County and settled in Delphi (now Delphi Falls ) in 1812 . During the British-American War he held the rank of major . After the war was over, he was Justice of the Peace and Supervisor in Onondaga County. On November 28, 1817, he was appointed Postmaster at Delphi - a position he held until June 25, 1821. He went about commercial business. He then sat in the New York State Assembly in 1819, 1831 and 1833, 1844 and 1848 . Last year he held the post of speaker there .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Crawford faction. In the 1820 congressional elections for the 17th Congress , Litchfield was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded George Hall on March 4, 1821 . In 1822 he ran in the 23rd constituency of New York for the 18th Congress . After a successful election, he entered the US House of Representatives on March 4, 1823 as the first representative of the district.
