Madison County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2010 census , Madison County had 73,442 residents and a population density of 42.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Wampsville .
geography
The area of the county consists of a plain shaped by Ice Age influences, which is largely flat in the north and merges into hilly land to the south. In the south there are also the most important elevations, the highest of which is Muller Hill with a height of 617 m. The northern boundary of the county is formed by the lakeshore of Oneida Lake ; other important lakes are Cazenovia Lake and Lake Moraine . The rivers drain the area mainly in a southerly direction, a few also north into Lake Oneida. The most important rivers are Chittenango Creek on the western border of the county, Oneida Creek on the eastern border and the Chenango River with its tributaries.
The county covers an area of 1,712.0 square kilometers, 16.7 square kilometers of which is water.

history
The county was formed from Chenango County on March 21, 1806 . It was named after James Madison , the 4th President of the USA.
Three locations have National Historic Landmark status , the New York State Barge Canal , Oneida Community Mansion House, and Gerrit Smith Estate . 76 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 19, 2018).
