List of members of the United States House of Representatives from New York
This list shows all the politicians who for since 1789 the state of New York to the United States House of Representatives have listened. The former British colony was represented in the first and second Congress with six members each in the Chamber of Parliament, which was still sitting in Philadelphia at the time . After various adjustments, caused by population censuses , the number of MPs initially rose to 40; later it went back to 31.
From 1873 there was another continuous increase, with the highest level between 1933 and 1953 being reached with 45 seats. Since then, the number of deputies from New York is in the lower house of Congress declined with each census. In the last decade it was 29; after the United States Census 2010 there were two fewer seats in the 2012 elections .
The history of the electoral process is more complex in New York than in any other state. Today, as in the rest of the USA, voting is carried out separately according to constituencies . In the past, however, it was very common for individual mandates to be awarded nationwide (“at-large”). This happened in 1872 with the seat of Lyman Tremain , in 1882 with the seat of Henry Warner Slocum and from 1932 to 1942 with the seat A and B. Up to and including 1840 it was also common that individual districts had several seats.

Remarks
- ↑ Due to these peculiarities as well as the numerous restructuring of the electoral districts after the census adjustments, there is naturally not always continuity in the individual seats.
