Nydia Margarita Velázquez (born March 28, 1953 in Yabucoa , Puerto Rico ) is an American university professor , politician of the Democratic Party and since 1993 member of the US House of Representatives for New York .

biography

After attending school, she first studied at the University of Puerto Rico on Camous Río Piedras , graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent postgraduate course at New York University she completed in 1976 with a Master of Arts . She then returned to Puerto Rico and worked there until 1981 at the University of Puerto Rico on the Camous of Humacao . In 1981 she was appointed adjunct professor at Hunter College in New York City and taught there until 1983. After a subsequent year of employment with Edolphus "Ed" Towns , a Democratic congressman for New York, she began her in 1984 Political career with the election of a member of the New York City Council , of which she was a member for an electoral term until 1986.

She then returned to Puerto Rico, where she was National Director of the Migration Department of the Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Human Resources , before being Director of the US Department of Puerto Rican Affairs from 1989 to 1992 ( Department of Puerto Rican Community Affairs in the United States for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico ).

In 1992 she was finally elected as a Democrat herself to the US House of Representatives and, after 12 re-elections so far, including the one in 2016, has represented the interests of the 12th and, from 2013, the 7th congressional electoral district of New since January 3, 1993 York.
