John P. Cushman

John Paine Cushman (born March 8, 1784 in Pomfret , Connecticut , † September 16, 1848 in Troy , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Paine Cushman was born in Pomfret about six months after the War of Independence ended . He attended community schools and the Plainfield Academy . In 1807 he graduated from Yale College . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1809 and then began practicing in Troy. Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party .

In the congressional elections of 1816 for the 15th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Hosea Moffitt on March 4, 1817 . Since he on a run again in 1818 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1819 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer. He was regent at the State University of New York from April 1830 until his resignation in April 1834 . In 1833 he became a trustee at Union College in Schenectady - a position he held until his death. Between 1834 and 1838 he was a recorder in Troy. In 1838 he became a judge at the district court in the third district. He held this post until 1844. He also pursued real estate transactions. He died on September 16, 1848 in Troy and was buried there in Oakwood Cemetery . At that point the Mexican-American War had ended for about seven months.
