Homer Augustus Nelson

Homer Augustus Nelson (born August 31, 1829 in Poughkeepsie , New York , † April 25, 1891 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1863 and 1865 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Homer Augustus Nelson completed his preparatory studies. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County . Between 1855 and 1862 he was a judge in Dutchess County. During the Civil War he served as a colonel in the 159th  regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry . In 1863 he took his leave. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1862 for the 38th Congress , Nelson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Stephen Baker on March 4, 1863 . In 1864 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1865 Congress of.

In 1867 he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly as a delegate . Between 1867 and 1870 he was Secretary of State of New York. He served in the New York Senate in 1882 and 1883 . In 1890 he was appointed to the commission which was supposed to change the judiciary article in the New York Constitution. He died on April 25, 1891 in Poughkeepsie and was then buried in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery .
