Beriah Palmer

Beriah Palmer (born 1740 in Bristol County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † May 20, 1812 in Ballston Spa , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1803 and 1805 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Beriah Palmer grew up during the British colonial era. He attended community schools. In 1769 he moved to Cornwall in Orange County . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in New York. He did survey work and worked as a farmer for Burnt Hills . In 1774 he moved to Ballston Spa in Saratoga County . During the Revolutionary War he served in the 12th  Regiment of the New York Militia . He worked as an assessor in 1779 and as Commissioner of Roads in 1780, 1783 and 1784in the district of Ballston . In 1784 he held the post of postmaster . Palmer sat in the Committee of Safety of Albany County . He served as Saratoga County Supervisor in 1790, 1791, and 1799 . In 1791 he was the moderator of the First Board of Supervisors in Saratoga County. In the same year he was appointed judge on the Court of Common Pleas . Between 1792 and 1795 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . In 1801 he took part as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of New York.

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional elections of 1802 for the 8th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of New York , where he took up his service on March 4, 1803 as the first member of this district to serve. He retired from the after March 3, 1805 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he served between 1808 and 1812 as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Saratoga County. He died on May 20, 1812 in Ballston Spa and was then buried in the Village Cemetery . The British-American War broke out about a month later.
