Oscar W. Swift

Oscar William Swift (born April 11, 1869 in Paines Hollow , New York , † June 30, 1940 in Brooklyn , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1915 and 1917 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Oscar William Swift was born in Paines Hollow about four years after the end of the Civil War . The Swift family moved to Michigan in 1877 and settled in Adrian . He attended public schools and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . In 1896 he graduated from New York Law School in New York City . He was admitted to the bar in 1897 and then began practicing in New York City. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1914 congressional elections for the 64th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of New York , where he succeeded James H. O'Brien on March 4, 1915 . After a successful re-election he suffered in 1918 a defeat and withdrew from the after March 3, 1919 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in New York City. He died in Brooklyn on June 30, 1940 and was buried in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla .
