Rensselaer Westerlo

Rensselaer Westerlo (born May 6, 1776 in Albany , New York Province, † April 18, 1851 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Rensselaer Westerlo was born and raised in Albany during the War of Independence . In 1795 he graduated from Columbia College (now Columbia University ) in New York City . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice. Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party .

In the congressional elections of 1816 for the 15th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Lovett on March 4, 1817 . After his time at Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer. He died on April 18, 1851 in Albany and was buried there in the Albany Rural Cemetery .

Rensselaer Westerlo was the son of Catharina Livingston (1745-1810) and Rev. Eliardus Westerlo (1737-1790). He married Jane Lansing (* 1785) on May 5, 1805, daughter of Cornelia Ray and Chancellor John Lansing , widow of Stephen Van Rensselaer. His sister, Catherine Westerlo, was married to John Woodworth .
